FOLKLORISTIC VENETO

Venice
Festa del Redentore
July 16th/17th 2011
Festa del Redentore is an ancient celebration, dating back to 400 years ago. To recall the end of the terrible plague which between 1575 and 1577 which killed almost 50.000 venetians, every summer and for two days hundreds of boats are decorated and meet in St Mark’s Basin and Giudecca Canal. A must see is the great firework show lasting 45 minutes, which creates outstanding games of light on the water surface, making Venice more romantic than ever. www.veneziamarketingeventi.it

Vogalonga
Middle/end of May
This amateur boat race, started in 1978 by a group of rowing fans, is now one of the most lively and involving events in Venice. Once a year, in spring, thousands of boats challenge each others on a 30 km race, ending at Punta della Dogana. Though the Vogalonga is quite a recent tradition, it has become more and more famous in the past few years until reaching 6000 members in 2009. Info: www.vogalonga.com 

Montagnana, Padova 

Palio di Montagnana
September, first week
The Palio is one of the oldest popular traditions in the Veneto and in other Italian regions, too. It recalls the celebrations that took place after the death of the tyrant Ezzelino da Romano, in 1259. It consists of a horse race accompanied by old folkloristic games, such as the wearing “gonfalone race” (gonfalone meaning banner). It is held on the first week of September and lasts about one week, during which several events are organised: you can join a medieval dinner, stroll through the oddities of the craft market, enjoy the fascinating nocturnal show of the burning fortress. Flowers festival 
April/May
This colourful festival, where you can find plants and flowers from all over Italy, is agains the impressive backdrop of the gardens of Este castle. Every year, in spring, the flower festival draws a great number of exhibitors and visitors, thanks to attractions such as theatre performances, art exhibitions, cooking lessons and much more. Vo’ Euganeo, Padua

Wine and grapes festival:
September, second week
The wine festival in Vo’ is one of the most representative and attended events in autumn thanks to its many activities and attractions, such as the bike tour on the hills and the tastings of local wines and cakes, and above all the spectacular parade of floats entirely made of grapes. Grisignano di Zocco, Padua
Fiera del Soco:
September, second week
One of the oldest country fairs in the Veneto, the Fiera del Soco combines historical recontruction and modern feast in an event that involves the whole village and its citizens. Concerts and other public shows are held, besides medieval games and a puppet theatre for children. There is also a huge open air craft market winding through the town centre for more than 2 km.
